TROOP 50 Gear

Philmont Scout Ranch, New Mexico

Be Prepared!

As a Scout we strive to be always prepared, and a part of being always prepared is having the  proper gear for when its needed. Here are some tips and essentials for some of our reccurring outings.

Ten Essentials

The ten essentials are ten items a scout should have with them on campouts or outings, to help be prepared for anything.

flashlight

first aid kit

pocket knife

sunscreen

water storage

rain jacket

fire starter

compass

trail food

extra clothes

Backpacking

When we are backpacking, we do not want any extra weight because we have to carry everything wherever we go. So we'll want to bring basic camping gear, clothes and our ten essentials. (We also divide up troop gear and food amongst the participants).  Our Backpacking Chair, Mr. Linstrom, recommends a lightweight, but sturdy backpacking pack with hip strapsThese straps will shift to load from the shoulders to the legs.

Aquatics

On river kayaking or canoeing trips, we carry all our gear with us, so packing light and picking gear that keeps dry is key. Our Aquatics Chair, Mr. Fu, recommends Dry Bags that are light, compact and waterproof to protect our belongings. Water shoes  and neoprene gloves are essential for comfort and protection of our feet and hands.

Meetings

When we have a meeting on Mondays, bringing and wearing the right equipment is almost as important as the Ten Essentials. Make sure to wear the full and correct uniform which is comprised of scout pants, scout belt or other approved belt, class A shirt, closed-toed shoes, neckerchief, neckerchief slide or other approved slide, scout handbook, class B shirt underneath (optional), and scout socks (only if you are wearing the short scout pants).
